Historical Miniature Wargaming Terrain in Medieval Times: Hunderd Years War

Hedge / Danewerk
I just started to make my first historical terrain experience. It is about the Hundred Years War in Europe. Stories about Jean de Arc, longbows and poles against cavalry. I started researching and drawing a picture of medieval landscapes and battlefields.

In the times of 100 Years war the word landscape was more or less invented. Because of settlement & growing cities. In the surroundings of cities & towns there was typical agricultural landscape with fields and pasturage divided by hedges and rows of trees. But in those times there were also larger areas of wilderness. Virgin forest mostly.

The frontier of cultural landscape and wilderness is area of lumber jacking and charcoal production.

The first elements which are very interesting from a strategic point of view are hedges. Hedges were located on earth walls and do not have the symmetric aspect like they have now a days. In Dark Age times they where more or less wild, a lot of different plants and depending on the location and use, they were modified with stones and boulders and other medieval construction techniques. They were used to keep sheep and cow on a certain area, to protect fields from erosion and they were used as military barricades. They are multifunctional landscape elements, easy and without high costs to build. They were also used to produce fire woods and willow rods for baskets.

A set of hedges is the key to an agricultural medieval landscape that has an interesting tactical aspect.

So I started to develop a certain type of hedges that fit into a gaming system that works with a high amount of miniatures on big bases.
