Tutorial: Making Model-Rocks from Styropor & Filler // Modell-Felsen aus Styropor & Spachtelmasse

This tutorial is about making model-rocks for your miniature wargaming table. We gonna mainly use Styropor - the cheap-big-bubble-stuff - and water based filler. The technique is good for making lava or alien terrain or some sort of underwater coral structures. Another advantage is that it is cheap, easy & quickly to make - perfect for large projects. And painting is a real joy because of all cracks and details which automatically appear by using this method.

GERMAN: Dieses Tutorial aus der Kategorie ``Felsen´´ zeigt wie man aus Styropor und Spachtelmasse Miniatur-Felsen basteln kann. Diese Variante geht schnell von der Hand, ist einfach in der Umsetzung und das Ergebnis lässt sich sehr gut & einfach bemalen. Außerdem sind die Materialien günstig zu erwerben. Die Technik eignet sich deshalb auch gut für größere Modellbau-Projekte. Das Ergebnis erinnert an Lava- oder Mondgestein, auch Korallen lassen sich so modellieren. 

Was man für dieses Modell-Felsen braucht: // All you need to make model-rocks: 

• Styropor foam - packaging material or hardware store // Styropor
• water-based filler or spackle // Spachtelmasse auf Wasser-Basis
• a base out of wood - MDF is my choice // ein Base, z. B.: aus MDF-Holz
• white glue // Leim
• sand & pebbles // Sand & Kiesel
• sanding paper // Schleifpapier
• wire brush // Drahtbürste
• brushes & paint // Pinsel & Farben
• knife // Messer
• wasserlöslichen Stift // water soluble marker pen

Los geht´s // Lets go:

Glue your piece of foam on your base and let it set. Draw the shape of your rock on the foam. Cut out roughly the shape with a sharp knife.  

GERMAN: Das Styropor-Stück auf das Base kleben, trocknen lassen und mit dem Stift die Form des Felsen anzeichnen. Dann wird die Form grob mit dem Cutter ausgeschnitten. 

Now it is about time to give your piece of foam more texture. Use the tip of the knife, sanding paper, your fingers or a wire brush to work out the rock surface. Do not worry about the foam bubble texture itself - we will cover it later on.

GERMAN: Nun wird das Styropor in Form gebracht. Dazu kann man die Spitze des Cutters, eine Drahtbürste oder einfach die Finger verwenden. Durch Rupfen und Raspeln wird die Oberfläche des Gesteins definiert. Den Feinschliff geben wir dem Felsen im nächsten Arbeitsschritt.

Mix your filler/spackle so it becomes a fluid yogurt-like consistence. Use an old brush and dabble the entire surface of the rock. You can go for several layers - make sure that you cover the foam. You can build up additional structured layers. Use a toothpick or other modelling tools to give your model-rock a more porous look. The filler changes its modelling qualities while setting and you can play with this process to achieve different results. Just try!   

GERMAN: Nun wird die Spachtelmasse angerührt oder verdünnt, die Konsistenz sollte ``yoghurt-artig´´ werden. Mit einem Pinsel wird die Masse in Schichten aufgetupft. So ensteht die eigentliche Oberfläche des Gesteins. Mit einem Zahnstocher oder Ähnlichem lässt sich eine noch porösere Oberfläche erzeugen. Grundsätzlich sollte man darauf achten, dass das Styropor vollständig überzogen ist. Mit dem Aushärten der Spachtelmasse ändern sich die Möglichkeiten des Modellierens. So kann man seinem Felsen unterschiedliche Texturen verpassen. Einfach mal ausprobieren!    

Add sand and pebbles to the base for additional details. Yo can also embed those with filler into the rock. 

GERMAN: Zuletzt wird das Base mit Sand und kleinen Steinchen weiter detailliert. Diese können auch mit Spachtelmasse in den Felsen gebettet werden, um Erosion darzustellen.
